There are over 32,000 homeless youth in Washington State. In response to this great need, we here at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church have been providing food backpacks for homeless and needy youth at DeLong Elementary School since 2012. At the end of the 2013-14 school year, we had delivered 1,767 Food Backpacks, this amounts to 10,602 meals for hungry youth from Kindergarten through 6th grade.
This year there are 79 youth who qualify for the McKinney-Vento program at DeLong school. This was a big increase, but we decided that with the generous giving of food and money from our congregation, donations from foundations and individuals we would be able to deliver 54 Food back packs containing six meals each week to DeLong school. Each food back pack costs between $12.75 and $15.00 depending on what we can buy on sale. Another church is partnering with us by giving 25 food packs each week.
The Backpack Program also gives food gift cards to the youth at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and the end of school in addition to the extra food sent home with them on three day weekends.
If you would like more information on this program please contact Jean Steingrebe through the church office.
